As early as 1980, the Belgian chemical industry voluntarily concluded a convention with authorities to eliminate CFC gases from products. This was clearly earlier than the celebrated Montréal Protocol. At stake is preserving the ozone layer. The industry seeks substitutes for all its industrial applications (aerosols, insulating equipment, synthetic foam, fridges…). Considering the flammability of these substitutes, the sector invests heavily at the production level (R&D, product manufacturing, production chain safety, etc) and in training both its works and its consumers (labelling, instructions for usage, sensitising and informing, etc). Today, the hole in the ozone layer is under control thanks to new technological solutions put into use.
